Why are fuel prices so high?
UK fuel prices have been on a rollercoaster since the mid-2020s — shaped by global crude oil markets, the pound's performance against the dollar, refinery capacity, and the ever-present load of fuel duty and VAT baked into every litre you buy.
The ongoing conflict in the Gulf region has added significant upward pressure on global oil supply, pushing crude prices higher and creating volatility that feeds directly into what you pay at the pump. When tension rises in one of the world's most critical oil-producing regions, the ripple effect reaches every forecourt in the UK within days.
Over 60% of what you pay at the pump goes straight to the Treasury in duty and VAT. Where does the data come from?
All fuel prices are sourced from the UK Government's official Fuel Finder service, which requires fuel retailers to submit pump prices regularly. This covers thousands of forecourts across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Prices are updated in near real time via the UK Government's live API. We use your postcode only to calculate distances — it is never stored or shared.
